Our Story

Our Mission

Our goal is to promote and provide access to rock climbing in an inclusive and safe environment. With the proximity of Athens to world-class climbing destinations like the New River Gorge and Red River Gorge, as well as multiple smaller areas locally, Athens is the perfect spot for climbers. We hope to develop a strong community of climbers in Southeast Ohio and beyond. Now, with our own local gym, we can provide an avenue to climbing for those new to the sport and continued training, fun and community for those who already climb. 

 

About Us

Owner/Operators Zach & Kate met in 2007 at the OU Ping Recreation Center climbing wall. A few weeks later they both ended up on a trip to the Red River Gorge with mutual friends. Over the years they have spent much of their free time climbing outside, mostly at Red River Gorge.  In 2017 they took a year-long road trip, climbing all over the country before moving back to Athens in 2018 to finally settle down.  

 

In 2019, with support from Climb Athens, a local non-profit, Zach & Kate decided to open Blockhouse Bouldering Gym in The Plains. Starting a business during the pandemic has been tough but rewarding. They are learning about life as entrepreneurs and love seeing the business grow and to see new and experienced climbers enjoying the space. They now enjoy being a bit closer to the New River Gorge and climbing there and the Red whenever possible.
